My Thoughts on HomeChef

For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying HomeChef, a meal kit delivery service. I tried HelloFresh before this one- if you missed that post, here it is!

HomeChef offered some really interesting recipes. I tried somethings I wouldn’t have tried otherwise, and also some things that were sooo totally my thing it was mildly shocking that I hadn’t thought to try them before. Pictured above are two salmon dishes. On the left, we have salmon with piccata butter and parmesan zucchini ribbons. That’s something I wouldn’t have tried otherwise, but was very fresh and light and delicious. On the right though, we have BBQ salmon (topped with crispy onions) with buttermilk-seasoned corn and cheddar poblano potatoes. Every ingredient in that one was a YES and they all came together perfectly. That one will definitely be made again.

THE most amazing thing about HomeChef is that it allows meat substitutions. On the left above was a burger recipe, but I was able to swap ground beef for ground turkey for no additional cost. This is so awesome because it gave me so many more options as someone who prefers to only eat certain kinds of meat. Many recipes also offered an Impossible meat substitution, but that one does carry an upcharge.

That turkey burger was amazing by the way, and is topped with a unique cheese (called Oaxaca) that I wouldn’t have otherwise probably ever gotten to try, which is fun!! There’s also a chipotle mayo hiding under that patty, and the fries are seasoned with cilantro and lime zest. To the right is some very yummy chicken tacos.

NOW, the above has become a new favorite and I have duplicated it twice already. This is jalepeno popper chicken with buttermilk dill corn and zucchini. This chicken is topped with a mixture of cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and jalapeno, and then crispy onions. We’re obsessed.

Above is really fun burger that I’ve also duplicated already. This Hawaiian turkey burger is glazed with teriyaki, set on a grilled pineapple slice, and topped with red cabbage-Asian sesame slaw. The sweet potatoes served on the side were tossed in Sriracha before roasting. Very delicious.

Here’s a cute side-by-side of the ingredients and the finished result for another stand-out meal from HomeChef. This was the most refreshing summer dinner and will definitely be made again- it’s Creole fish cakes with chipotle crema and a sweet corn and poblano succotash on the side. 10/10.

Overall I really enjoyed the experience of using HomeChef. Compared to HelloFresh, I felt that HF had trendier meals for the most part but there were more HC meals that became favorites and that I’ve made again on my own since canceling the box. I had just a couple issues with produce in the HC box (a poblano with multiple cuts/holes/some sort of lacerations) and a red onion that was heavily bruised) and that didn’t seem to happen with HF. HOWEVER, as of now, I think if you only want to try one I’d recommend HomeChef. It felt like a better value simply because it gave me more recipes that I’m excited to try again or have tried again already. I think that’s important!

Thanks for reading this post. I hope it was interesting and informative! If you do happen upon this and try a meal kit (one mentioned here or another) I’d love to read your thoughts.
