Where We Ate Chicago Classics

Long time no see. That’s the pattern. I say it every time, but life’s been busy! This time it’s that we just moved (into a house!) and it’s been wild unpacking and upgrading and all of that. I also started a new job the same week (as a full time copywriter!), plus my personal computer has been lowkey unreliable. Those are my excuses for not posting any of this yet even though it’s been almost two months since the trip! I’m not even going to try to assign myself a posting schedule any more, lol, I’m just gonna keep doing my best.

Anywhay!

We had to eat all the Chicago classics while in town, of course. We had hot dogs twice! Once proper Chicago dogs (mine veggie, Jon’s beef) and then some fun speciality dogs too. We had our beautiful indulgent deep dish. And for nostalgia’s sake, we also hit up Jon’s favorite spots in the Region from his childhood there.

Miner-Dunn, a classic diner spot in NW Indiana

We’ll start there! Here’s Miner-Dunn, a classic diner spot in Highland, IN, about 40 minutes from Chicago. It’s been open since 1932 and is a staple of the community! They serve a classic burger, pictured below, and are known for their orange sherbet, which they were unfortunately out of that day.

Our other throwback spot is Jon’s favorite food in the world, Schoop’s Hamburgers. They also have amazing and super fresh and crispy chicken tenders, which is what I always get. If you do stop by, you HAVE to get the Green River, a limey soda distinct to the area.

Next, let’s cover our hot dogs. First, we had traditional Chicago dogs at Flub-a-Dub-Chub’s. It’s a super cute spot covered in hilarious drawings of hot dogs, created by patrons. Also, the food was awesome. See below close-ups of the beef and veggie versions.

We also had delicious specialty dogs at Devil Dawg’s. TBH, the service here wasn’t the best and when we went the restaurant was very crowded (in March of 2021, with COVID protocols still in place), many patrons weren’t wearing masks, and tables seemed dirty. As such, we took these to go and ate them in our hotel room. They were really good though lol.

The aesthetic of this place was pretty cool, so I do wanna show that off as well.

Last but CERTAINLY not least, classic Chicago deep dish pizza. Our favorite spot is Gino’s East. It’s super funky and their crusty is soooo buttery, flakey and delicious. We typically get the spinach margherita pizza. This time we also had their hummus plate as an appetizer, just for something light. It was surprisingly so delicious! The hummus was the best I’ve ever had and I actually loved the radishes with it. Who’da thought.

I’ve gotta go make lunch now, because inserting these images has made me hungry AF. I always love Chicago and all of the YUMS they have to offer. I will be throwing up more posts, on the other stuff we ate and on the massive Starbucks we visited. We also took tons of video that has to be edited and published as well. More Chicago content coming! I hope y’all enjoyed seeing where we got our classic eats in Chicago, and I hope you’re inspired to add a new spot to your list if you head out there.
